Riding, riding & a bit more

Well, looking back at my riding diary, it is apparent I deserve a night chilling at home – eight rides in the previous twelve days & the small matter of four hours of sleep on Saturday night & riding at two in the morning. Most of that time the weather has been pretty average – but the luxury of living so close to trails is that you can choose when you want to go out, knowing that if the weather is not great it will improve soon. The Sunday before last Alex & I headed back up Barrier Mountain from the lakeside, as we didn’t have all that much time. Not quite as glorious view as the previous time – but at least the poor forecast had discouraged all the hikers – we only saw a few other bikers. True to form, I got another puncture – but that didn’t really discourage me from having a blast down Jewell Pass again.

As I had worked that Saturday, I took Monday off & went exploring around Moose Mountain with James – he was keen to go somewhere he hadn’t been riding before. I of course am just plain keen to go riding anywhere in this great area. We had about a ninety minute drive through K-Country (incidentally, that big snow scene in Inception was filmed further up the Kananaskis Valley somewhere – if you haven’t seen that film yet, I encourage you to do so) before we eventually found a trail head. We are not sure we found the correct one, but we got a nice short ride (sixty to ninety minutes) on the Sulphur Spring trail – it was a pleasant change to riding on a trail that was mostly dirt & had noticeably less roots & rocks. The clouds did exactly make for great views & we got quite confused trying to work out which peak & valley was which. There are few more rides in the area I would like to do in the next couple of months.

After a couple days’ break (due to weather), on Thursday night Alex was keen to brave the showers (it had been raining in Canmore most of the afternoon) & head up to the Nordic Center to scope out the course for the 24 Hours of Adrenaline – an extremely popular 24 hr solo/relay event. Alex was lucky to get in riding for Megan’s work’s corporate team, as the entries tend to fill up within a day. We found the first half of the course & got stuck in the big climb above the Day Lodge. Quite a bit of this part of the loop was on freshly cut trails & with all the rain they were very slick & the roots were particularly slippery. It was an awful climb & I was glad that I was not racing – also, the laps were 17 km long – that’s over twice as long the Moonride laps & there were some brutal climbs in there too.

Friday was an absolutely stunning day & even though Alex was back up at the 24 hr course I couldn’t help but go for a ride by myself – the first one in over two months. I headed out to the Montane Traverse on the other side of the valley – this is one of the first trails I did when I arrived. The first hill was still absolutely punishing – but I must be a bit fitter & stronger now as it was more manageable this time. What I remember as a two and a half to three hour ride only turned out to be ninety minutes (riding my oneself has so many less stops) & I was back in time for the weekly dose of the IT Crowd. I thought too soon, as later that night Alex volunteered me to ride in a team from Cochrane & Calgary that had lost one of their riders to unfitness. I was extra pleased for the day’s sunshine after that – there was a chance the course may be in better condition.

Unlike the Moonride, this event started at noon in the blazing sun – but I was at work for that. Knocking off work early, I rushed home & organised my riding gear & rocked on up to find my team. I was promptly told that I was riding next & once we were at the RV I busied myself getting ready & fueling up. Once I had got the briefing from Peter (team captain it would seem) on the archaic timing system – lots of people in a tent with big sheets of paper writing down the time of each team’s baton change, I couldn’t believe it was so bad – I waited around for Rowan to come in. And waited, and waited – it turned out he had got a flat (usually my domain) & had to beg & borrow a tube – before heading out at 1815. I was lucky as it was starting to cool down. I had a great first lap & was pleased to do the 17 km in 64 minutes & only got passed by two other riders. I was even more pleased to be stomping on the big chain ring on most of the fire road & doing the rest of the lap in the middle ring – all that stubborn refusal to drop down in the previous two months was paying off. There was a nice long climb near the end on which I passed countless people & then it got brutally steep for a hundred metres or so – then I realised why everyone was looking so beat on finishing their laps.

There were some interesting comparisons with the Moonride. Firstly, it was summer (you couldn’t run a bike race in winter here) & that meant only about seven hours of darkness – a bit short changed on the night riding front. But it was dry & warm; it wasn’t quite the same as being covered in mud, waiting around at the team’s tent site wrapped in blankets – I missed the adventurous feeling. As I said before this lap was twice as long as the Moonride – which was good & bad. It meant we only got to go out three times each, good for recovery – but you get a lot of time sitting around waiting & doing nothing. It was a much more technical lap than the Moonride, but entirely rideable – this goes some to explaining the band of rider level, which was much narrower than similar events I have ridden in in NZ. It was much more just mountain bikers – there were no really really fast roadies burning around the track & there were far fewer novices & no kids riding. The lack of fast riders could be seen that I only got passed nine times in three & a half hours of riding – I’m not nearly fast enough to warrant that. The lack of children may have also been due to there not being a 12 event running at the same time; I like to see the kids out having a go & or being pulled/carried around by their parents. But the biggest difference was the lack of atmosphere – the Moonride is definitely a much more fun event. I think this was mostly because the lap didn’t go through where all the tents were set up – you just weren’t as close to the action – & the loudspeakers didn’t reach to most of the team sites.

Being so close to home, I was able to pop home for dinner – I forced the third burrito down, thinking I needed the fuel – then went back up to see my team & doze in the RV (Peter works for an RV company, so had the lend of a really nicely finished medium sized RV – but what would be massive back in NZ). My next lap was due to start at one in the morning, so there I was waiting & waiting for Rowan again. This time he broke his chain twice & pulled out of the lap. That third burrito came back to haunt me with a niggling stitch for most of lap, but I made it around in the dark without crashing & only eight minutes slower – I was quite pleased with that. Being nearly three I headed home to sleep in my own bed (luxury) for four hours before heading back for my last lap at nine – I was surprised I was only a minute slower than my other daylight lap (for which I was fresh) & it was still mercifully cool as well. After depositing my gear in the car, I was lucky enough to see a great big bald eagle circling over the road. We got one more lap in after my last one – we finished up with fifteen altogether – it was a pretty casual team that I was lucky enough to help out. A good event, but I was missing the Moonride & Team Santa Cruzin’ by the end of it. However, you don’t get views like this at the Moonride:

I sure don’t get tired of looking out my window, or walking back from the grocery store, or riding around town or on the trails & seeing those mountains around (not the best photos of them, but they’re always just right there). Have I mentioned I love this place?

General catchup

It’s been a while & although there are no momentous occurrences, a few little things have happened over the last couple of months. Working as the Melter Relief Supervisor over summer meant a rather mixed up shift roster over the months when the other supervisors (understandably) like to take leave. Consequently, I took a few breaks when I could get them.

First up at the end of January was the best part of a week down in Palmerston North for Liz Gray’s wedding. Going down to Palmy for five or six days when everyone else has gone back to work was a bit of a stuff up – there was very little to do. I took my bike down, of course, to try & start a little training in for Karapoti (early March) – one decent ride up to the windmills (the big ones) through Ashhurst, a ride down memory lane (really the Bridle Path beside the river – a much ridden path while I was at university) & a ride in to town. I also managed to get hooked on Scrubs & watched the first two seasons (& I probably read a book too).

The wedding at Wharerata at Massey on Friday afternoon was great (got to meet Nigel [the groom] for the first time) – for Palmerston North, it was insanely hot in the late afternoon. A nice small service in the garden, caught up with a few people I hadn’t seen in a while & even managed some photos (my camera has been well rested so far this year).

Somewhere around this time (just after Waitangi weekend – it’s easy to remember when one checks the riding diary), I got a letter in the post telling me that my application for UK citizenship had been accepted. I was strangely, for me anyway, excited about this – it turned up earlier than expected & meant that I could start planning a move to the UK & a holiday in the States on the way. I also had to go down to Wellington for the citizenship ceremony at the High Commission – this I was able to tie in nicely with my trip down for Karapoti. So after said trip at the start of March, I officially became a Brit – now I just have to learn to drink warm beer, wear socks with sandles & complain about everything – especially the weather. Unfortunately I didn’t beat my Karapoti time (which isn’t particularly flash), which I was quite disappointed by.

I think I had three nights down in Wellington – stayed with Elizabeth & Nigel in their quite interesting house. Apparently it was the Yugoslav Embassy (I think an official residence is more likely) & it’s a big old house that is held by the Public Trust on behalf of Yugoslavia (in case the country ever returns!). I saw Mum briefly as she came up for the ceremony – always good to catch up. Unfortunately, it rained quite heavily on Friday night before the race & it was still drizzling on Saturday morning. Not long before the start I realised that I had managed to leave both of my spare pumps at home – a sure sign that I would get a puncture. About ten minutes before the race was due to start I finally found tent that was selling bike stuff – however, they were almost as disorganised as I was & hadn’t unpacked anything yet. We spent another five minutes unpacking all the boxes (that were labelled very vaguely) trying to find the pumps. After the gloves, bottle cages, shock pumps, saddle bags, gloves, bottles & every other imaginable bicycle accessory we finally found the pumps – saved!

The race started off in a drizzle & was the normal fast gravel to start with. Half way up the warm up climb there was a small descent across a small stream & up again – there must have been a decent rock coming out of it & I was glad no to be joining the many on the side of the track repairing punctures. Unfortunately quite a few minutes later I was on the side of a climb changing a tube in the rain. Just as well I had a pump – pity it was a piece of junk & took ages to inflate my tyre anywhere close to where it should have been. Back riding, but taking it easy & trying no to get a snake bite. Survived the first proper climb & congregated with a lot of riders at a clearing at the top of the Rockgarden to do some maintenance (much lube going on etc) & managed to borrow a really nice little pump & get my rear tyre up to a good pressure. About that time some one came running back up to the track to where we were to tell the first aiders that some guy had fallen off & broken his arm. We had to take it pretty easy & there was so many riders that weren’t keen on breaking ourselves that we formed a procession walking down the Rockgarden – not nearly as much fun, but it was slippery & we survived in one piece. Survived more pushing to the top of the Devil’s Staircase & really enjoyed the nice long down hill – pity I punctured again. This time I was replacing my tube with three others & ended gifting my holed tubes to another guy whose weren’t repairable. Easily made it up the last hill (had helped that I had had two big breaks repairing flats!) & had a quick ride out down the gravel road with some other rider & almost got swept down the river just before the finish.

Was glad to finish, & I figure the forty minutes extra was down to the two slow puncture repairs & all the extra mud & traffic. Altogether I was happy with how I rode & wasn’t feeling too tired at the end – but most of all happy to survive the rain & mud without breaking myself. It was also a bonus that I got the rental car out of the paddock without getting stuck or damaged. Wonderful to get back to another fantastic Elizabeth-cooked meal.

No big riding trips since then – many laps of Puni & Hunua on the singlespeed & I think a couple of trips to Woodhill have been the extent of it. In a swallowing-one’s-pride move I have started swimming lessons – I finally decided not being able to swim to save one’s self was not really good enough & I should at least give learning to survive in water without a life jacket another a go. So far, kicking in the water is ridiculously tiring – it is so much easier to ride a bike for a few hours than kick a few lengths of the pool!

In the last two weekends I have done more tramping than riding – it’s starting to weird me out a bit. (As an aside, I did manage to see Tendulkar score a test century at Hamilton – which was a lot more satisfying than our batting). Last week it was up Mt Pirongia – everyone kept telling me it would be muddy, but thankfully it wasn’t (just as well for Jane, as she left her boots behind). First up it was a 500m climb to a trig which took about forty minutes.

From here there was only about 200m in altitude to the summit. But of course, it was a typical ridge track – must have been seven or eight descents followed by ascents. But we made good time & got to the summit in two & a half hours. Pretty good views, but a bit too much cloud encroaching from the horizons to give clear vistas. We decided to carry on to the small hut (six bunks) for lunch. The hut has only been there since 1980 (put up as day trampers kept getting lost & caught out – something we weren’t planning on doing, especially as I was only carrying my Camelbak) – but surprisingly had a stocked refrigerator (which we assume was for the builders of the new track that started from the hut & went down the south side of Pirongia).

Going down wasn’t a whole lot faster, but we did stop to climb a rocky outcrop (Adele would be proud). A great day’s walk – pleased to be back at the car six hours after we left – not so pleased to get home in time to see the Warriors get beaten by the Broncos & lose more players to injuries at the start of the season. This weekend just gone was the annual walk to Homunga Bay from Waihi Beach – a pleasant stroll on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon; best of all I stayed with Dave & Rosey & Evah, did not too much, slept in & finished the new Jack Reacher.

Other titbits – I haven’t worked a twelve hour shift in ten days & should not have to do any more, my new British passport has turned up (only three weeks – quite impressed) & it’s time for Conchords…

Stupid things to do after night shifts…

Firstly, work for twelve hours through the night, go home, catch two or three hours of sleep & then get up & do the MTB leg of a multisport race in the midday heat. Or secondly, get home, watch the ABs beat Ireland with some mates until 8.30, once again catch two hours of sleep, get up, pack & go to Sydney. As my grandfather (whom I’ve just visited in Sydney) would say – happy days.

The local multisport event, Steelman Ironmaiden (www.steelmanironmaiden.co.nz) has been running for a few years now & I was talked in to doing the MTB leg (there were also a road ride, a kayak down the Waikato & a run through the countryside back in to Waiuku to finish) with a Melters B-Shift (either current or past) team. A slow ride on the road helping to fix other’s punctures & a good kayak later & I was lucky enough to be starting in the latter half of the field for the MTB – good for the ego as I passed twenty-five others on the 33 km course. I was pleased with an hour and a half for the course, as with a lack of sleep I was hardly in peak condition (not that my body has any idea what peak condition is). It must be said however, that MTB was a bit of a misnomer for the course – I think I spent well over half of the time in the big chainring on the mostly gravel & sealed roads of the course. Never mind, it was an awful lot of fun & we were pleased to finish tenth of about twenty teams in our category.

A couple of day shifts, four days off at home with a bit of singlespeeding at Puni thrown in (with a massive dose of hayfever that managed to swell my right eye closed), two more night shifts & then it was off to NSW for five days. The reason for the trip was the final instalment of the graduate course at work (always to catch up with other young graduates from around the business). Coincidentally, Mum was also in Sydney for two weeks staying with her family so it was great to catch up with all of Mum’s immediate family. Also got to catch up with a couple of ex-NZSteel mates that are now working at Port Kembla – funnily enough, unbeknown to them, until we met up for a beer, was that they live within about a hundred metres of each other.
